The Courtyard Chicken House

Carrboro, NC

On a small lot in downtown Carrboro is a 2000 sqft home that faces the street for light and connection but lives in the back around a central courtyard and beautiful gardens…often occupied by chickens!

A two-sided fireplace and two large sliding doors connect the living room with the courtyard. The main kitchen, dining, living space is separated from the home office by a playful screen wall and this and a short hall allow for privacy for the primary suite.

The office also has a ships ladder and hatch door to a conditioned and finished attic hang out space. Playful both inside and out meets durability, low maintenance and livability.

We worked with Sophie to design and build our home and from start to finish, it was a smooth process. Sophie is intelligent, creative, thoughtful, collaborative and truly knowledgeable about design and construction. We ended up with a beautiful, functional home! I’ve had several friends work with Sophie on their home projects and each one has had a positive experience. Sophie is dedicated and professional and truly enjoys the projects she works on.
