The Hikari House
Chapel Hill, NC
I could never describe better than the homeowner what we did with their home:
We brainstormed what our home and its journey mean to us, focusing particularly on the dramatic transformation of letting brilliant light into our spaces. Here are a few names we came up with that feel personal to us:
- The Hikari House (光): Hikari is the Japanese word for “light” or “radiance.” It beautifully honors the transformation of opening up our space to let radiant energy flood into our daily life.
- The Danran House (団欒): Danran means “family sitting in a happy circle” or “harmonious family gathering,” which speaks directly to the joy we feel in this space.
- The Lightwell: This architectural focus represents bringing light into dark spaces, mirroring an internal awakening or moving out of a heavy season.
- The Vessel: We love the implication of the house as a beautiful, clean container meant to hold life, spirit, and energy.
Need I say more?
I sincerely recommend Sophie to everyone. She helped update our 30+ year old house by modernizing kitchen, bathrooms, front door, stairs. etc. Our house feels so bright and airy now. It is so much easier to clean and maintain the house. The builder (Actual Size Builders) and their team worked through the supply shortage during COVID. Everybody was honest and pleasure to work with. Before the renovation, we were at a loss where to even start with. Sophie and her team measured everything, created the design and revised it patiently. She even went shopping with us and kept all the house info organized for us. It was a little scary to hire an architect. I am glad we did. It was so worth it. Now kids started cooking and cleaning dishes. Husband is running roomba and doing laundry without me asking.
