M: leed silver historic renovation in chapel hill
This early Aladdin kit house, gutted and abandoned in mid-renovation, needed many practical and aesthetic renovations-- within the restrictions of the historic district. We chose materials for their longevity, historical relevence, and eco-friendliness. Repurposed items function alongside the latest in “green” practices, such as reusing wood, doors, and cabinets; installing insulation made from recycled soda bottles; and applying a 5V metal roof. Energy Star appliances and state-of-the-art wiring and plumbing reduce utility demand and cost.
Careful design created better flow and comfort for modern living, in harmony with extant features such as the lovely but non-functioning fireplace which mirrors a new high efficiency gas fireplace. Our collaborative efforts and commitment earned the LEED Silver certification as well as a feature in Fine Homebuilding magazine. The McCullough renovation was granted the Green Home of the Year 2012 award as Best Historical Renovation.
